"Gidget Goes Hawaiian", 1961, Starring Deborah Walley, James Darren, Carl Reiner and Peggy Cass. After the success of the original Gidget movie, about a girl who loves surfing, the sequel moves to Hawaii where most of the film was shot on and around Waikiki Beach. At right, Gidget (Walley) and boyfriend (Darren) are having a lover's spat while on a catamaran. "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" did a lot to help promote Waikiki as a tourist spot as well as popularize surfing and the teenage beach surf scene throughout the U.S. in the early 60's. The concept was also made into at least one television series. |
